Invited by Chinese municipal government and development zones, a nine-member SAPA-West delegation, led by Dr. Jun Xiang, President of SAPA-West, has conducted a one-week visit to Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Shenzhen and Haikou from November 21-26, 2005. The delegation was warmly welcomed in each city by government officials, biotech entrepreneurs and research institutes.
The missions of this trip were to bridge the biotech and pharmaceutical industries between US and China, explore business opportunities for SAPA-West entrepreneurs, and promote the influence of SAPA-West in China. In the first stop, the delegation visited Guangzhou Nansha Economic Development Zone and met by Vice Mayor of Guangzhou City, Mr. Mingde Chen, and other top officials. The delegation also visited Southern Medical University (previously The First Military Medical University). The delegation and Bureau of Nansha Economic Development Zone discussed the mutual interests and goals of the both parties in a very pleasant environment and signed a collaboration agreement to build a long-term collaborative relationship.
The second stop was Zhongshan National Health Technology Park, where the major focus is manufacturing and CMO. Following a round-table presentation and discussion session with the Park management and local entrepreneurs, the delegation visited three representative manufacturing sites and was greatly impressed by the scale of this industry park.
The delegation drove to Shenzhen the same day immediately after the visit of Zhongshan. Thanks to the careful coordination and host of Dr. Xiangping Lu, CEO of Shenzhen Chipscreen Biosciences, Ltd., the delegation met the top officers of Shenzhen Bureau of Science, Technology and Information in a sit-down session, visited Shenzhen Science and Technology Incubator, and gave three presentations in a conference with ~50 entrepreneurs. The delegation also visited Shenzhen Longgang Technology Park and had a round-table discussion session with executives of the startup companies incubated in the Park. Finally, SAPA-West and Shenzhen Longguang Science and Technology Development Zone signed a collaboration agreement. All these activities were conducted within the 28-hour stay in Shenzhen.
Haikou was the last stop of this trip. The delegation attended a meeting on Nov. 25 hosted by Ms. Xiumei Yuan, Vice Mayor of Haikou City, where representatives from all major bureaus of Haikou Municipal government and chief executive officers of local biotech and pharmaceutical companies attended. The delegation members presented their business plans in this meeting. Later, the delegation visited the Haikou Medical Research Institute, and was welcomed by Vice Governor of Hainan province, Mr. Cheng Chen, Mayor of Haikou, Mr. Ci Chen, top officials of Hainan Provincial FDA, and many other research staffs. Haikou municipal government expressed great interests in attracting foreign talents and investments to Haikou Pharmaceutical Valley.
The delegation received overwhelming responses during and after the trip. Many people expressed the willingness to continue information exchange and to develop collaborative relationship with SAPA-West. Based on the success experience of this trip, SAPA-West Executive Council has decided to organize another trip in early May 2006, to Tianjin, Suzhou and Hangzhou. Announcement will be made through emails and newsletters soon.
