Program Chair:
Jian Brian Xu, MD, PhD, DABT Chair of SAPA-West Science & Technology Committee
1:10 ~ 1:50 pm Lead Discovery via High Throughput Screening
Bruce D. Koch , PhD, Associate Director and Leader of the High Throughput Screening Group, Roche Palo Alto
Dr. Koch received his BS degree in Biology from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine in 1979 and a PhD. in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University in 1986. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral fellow of the Jane Coffins Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research in the lab of Prof. Randy Schekman in the Biochemistry Department at UC Berkeley. In 1991, he joined Syntex Research in Palo Alto and then joined Roche when they acquired Syntex in 1995. Prior to joining the HTS group, Dr. Koch was in the Analgesia Department, where he worked on target validation and assay development for novel cloned sodium channels.
HTS at Roche Palo Alto concentrates on small molecule lead discovery for programs targeting disorders involving inflammation, virology, the central nervous system, or the genitourinary areas.
1:50 ~ 2:30 pm Scaffold-Based Drug Discovery: From Structure to Clinic
Yong-Liang Zhu, PhD, Sr. Scientist, Informatics, Plexxikon Inc
Dr. Zhu received his BS degree in Biology from Nanjing University, Nanjing, China in 1984 and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from University of California at Berkeley in 1999. Subsequently, he was briefly a postdoctoral fellow in the Dept. of Plant and Molecular Biology at UC Berkeley. Then he joined Gene Logic Inc in Berkeley and then joined Double Twist Inc in Oakland. Dr. Zhu has been working for Plexxikon Inc since 2001. He works on identifying and designing small molecule inhibitors of several therapeutic protein targets.

Bhaskara Jasti, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics and Chairman, Department of Pharmaceutics and Medicinal Chemistry, TJL School of Pharmacy, University of the Pacific
After receiving his Ph.D. in 1995, Dr. Jasti, he had a postdoctoral training and later worked as Staff Scientist at Cygnus Therapeutics Systems. In 1998, Dr. Jasti joined Departments of Pharmacy and Internal Medicine at Wayne State University as an assistant professor. During this time, he also served as Assistant Director of pharmacology core, developing anticancer drugs and delivery systems. He has been an active member of AAPS, and has been contributing to AAPS, currently serving as Secretary/Treasurer of Biotech section. He is also serving as vice-chair of Bay Area Discussion Group (BADG), an affiliate of AAPS. Dr. Jasti current research interests are targeted delivery of antibodies and the intracellular delivery of antibodies. He published more than 30 papers and presented more than 60 papers at various national and international meetings in the area of drug delivery and the design of targeted and mucosal drug delivery systems. In addition he edited 2 books on pharmaceutics and drug delivery. He is recognized by the University of the Pacific as a Thomas J Long Fellow 4 different times and received a prestigious University Award, Eberhardt Teacher Scholar of the year in 2005.
